A toddler has been left locked inside a car at a shopping centre while temperatures reached 36C outside.

Bystanders noticed a two-year-old crying inside a locked car at Casuarina Shopping Centre in Darwin at about 3pm on Sunday.

Paramedics were called to the car park and rescued the ‘extremely distressed’ toddler.

St John Ambulance regional manager Andrew Everingham said the car’s engine was turned off and it was a ‘very, very hot day’ as temperatures soared across the territory.

‘It doesn’t take long for a child to become really distressed and overcome by that heat,’  he told NT News.

Mr Everingham said the child was treated by ambulance crews in the shopping centre car park, before the father arrived back to his car.

‘Once they got access to the child, they provided first aid and transported them to Royal Darwin Hospital for assessment,’ he said.

‘Luckily the child did not show any symptoms of heat stroke despite being extremely distressed.’

Mr Everingham said the incident is a reminder to parents not to leave children alone in hot cars this summer.

The rescue comes less than two weeks after a five-year-old girl died after being pulled unconscious from a car on a 38C day in Port Stephens, north of Newcastle.

Aloiz Gorjup pulled his daughter Natasha from the car, and said she climbed into the parked car herself while he thought she was playing in the garden.
