Tyson Fury watched a mega-fight with Anthony Joshua ‘going down the drain’ according to Frank Warren

Tyson Fury watched his £200m mega-fight with Anthony Joshua ‘go down the drain,’ reveals promoter Frank Warren as he claims AJ wouldn’t have lasted long if he was fighting the Gypsy King

  • Tyson Fury saw Anthony Joshua’s defeat as a blow to his future fight plans
  • The 31-year-old lost his belts after a wide points defeat to Oleksandr Usyk
  • Promoter Frank Warren criticised Joshua for not using his size advantage
  • Fury will hope to avoid a similar fate when he fights Deontay Wilder next month

Tyson Fury watched Anthony Joshua’s defeat to Oleksandr Usyk with disappointment that a potential mega fight between the Brits has taken another hit, according to his promoter Frank Warren.

Joshua lost his belts to the Ukrainian at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after all three judges scored the bout in favour of Usyk.

A rematch clause means the 31-year-old will get the chance to become a three-time world champion should he take the fight as expected, but the potential all-British clash with Fury is once again seemingly a long way from coming to fruition.

‘He [Joshua] just wasn’t doing what you’d think a bigger guy would do,’ Warren told talkSPORT.

‘I spoke to Tyson during the fight and we were both of the same opinion. All Tyson could see was a massive big fight going down the drain, which is what happened.’

Usyk, a former undisputed cruiserweight champion, outboxed Joshua throughout the 12 rounds on Saturday night, and in doing so put a major dent in the Brit’s hopes of becoming an undisputed champion himself.

Many pundits have expressed their surprise that Joshua did not look to put the Ukrainian under more pressure and use his size advantage, and Warren was also critical of the tactics on show.

‘You would’ve thought the bigger man would have imposed himself. He just did not do it and didn’t do it in any part of the fight,’ Warren said.

‘Not in any part of that fight was he dominant. All Usyk was doing was just totally outboxing him.

‘I said to Tyson, “Can you imagine if you were in there with him, how long that would’ve lasted?”

‘Tyson’s got as fast hands as Usyk’s got, as good a boxing brain as Usyk’s got and as good footwork as Usyk’s got.

‘But he’s a bigger puncher and he’s got a better chin.’

Fury will be hoping not to suffer a similar fate when he fights Deontay Wilder for a third time on October 9 in Las Vegas.

The bout was due to take place earlier in the summer but was delayed due to a Covid outbreak in Fury’s camp. Neither fighter has been in the ring since they fought each other in February 2020, with Fury winning in the seventh round.
