Uber says it is ‘deeply troubled’ after one of its drivers shot and killed father-of-one passenger

Uber says it is ‘deeply troubled’ after one of its drivers shot and killed a passenger over an alleged fight Friday.

Michael Hancock, 29, was arrested for shooting dead husband and father-of-one Hyun Soo Kim, 45, on a Denver highway.

Police revealed that a detective ‘located 10 spent 40 caliber cartridges’ and the victim was found ‘lying in the floorboard of the front passenger seat’.

After crashing into a median, Hancock, who also works as a counselor at a group home for teenagers, called police to report the shooting and was found with a semi-automatic pistol on him.

In a statement, Uber told CBS News: ‘We are deeply troubled by the events in Denver today. Our thoughts are with the families of those involved.’

The incident took place at around 2.45am while the ride-sharing vehicle was traveling in the southbound lanes of Interstate 25 near University Boulevard.

According to investigators, the Uber driver called 911 to report the shooting.

He also allegedly told a witness that he opened fire after his customer tried to attack Him.

However, according to a partially redacted police report, Hancock declined to discuss the shooting with investigators without a lawyer.

Officers who responded to the scene attempted CPR, but the man could not be revived after suffering multiple gunshot wounds, reported The Denver Channel.

Denver Police Department spokesman Sonny Jackson said preliminary information points to a conflict between Hancock and his passenger.

Following the shooting, the driver’s silver Nissan sedan crashed into the median.

Hancock and the victim were both transported to hospitals. Jackson said the passenger was pronounced dead, and the motorist has been treated and released.

Hancock’s parents revealed that the 29-year-old is a married father-of-two who works two jobs and attends college.

They also said he has a concealed carry permit because he used to work as a security guard.

Stephanie Hancock told 9News her son has been working for Uber for a couple of years to earn extra money.

He also works as a counselor at a group home for teenagers.

Michael Hancock Sr praised his son as a ‘great dad’ and said ‘his big thing is to make the world a better place.’

Court records obtained by The Denver Channel indicate that Hancock’s past record included multiple traffic violations.

Under Uber’s policy, drivers and passengers are prohibited from carrying weapons of any kind in a vehicle using the ride-sharing app.

The ride-hailing company said in a statement Friday that it is ‘deeply troubled’ by the fatal shooting and that its thoughts are with the families of all those involved and that it will continue to work closely with police.
