Conor McGregor’s rivals wasted no time in piling in on his misery after he broke his ankle in the first round of his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier.

McGregor’s leg buckled beneath him as he threw a punch in the final seconds of a gripping first round, where Poirier had delivered a brutal onslaught upon the Irishman.

At the sound of the bell, McGregor was unable to get to his feet and a doctor promptly called an end to the contest, handing Poirier a second win over the Irishman.

The UFC 264 result means that McGregor has lost three of his last four fights, leaving him in a tricky position in his bid to return to the summit of the lightweight division. 

McGregor has compiled a lengthy list of foes who immediately took to Twitter to taunt the Notorious following his latest setback.

Justin Gaethje, who hasn’t ever fought McGregor but has exchanged terse words with the 32-year-old on social media, simply tweeted a clown emoji.

Daniel Cormier, an ex-fighter turned UFC commentator, tweeted: ‘Crazy to think that at the end of the weigh in Conor said he (Poirier) would be taken out on a stretcher.

‘And now Conor gets taken out on a stretcher. Man this game we play is so crazy!!!! Hats off to the Diamond of Lafayette!!’.

Meanwhile, Floyd Mayweather flaunted his winnings after pocketing $35,000 having backed Poirier to win in Las Vegas. 

The 44-year-old, who remained unbeaten throughougt his illustrious career, faced McGregor in a boxing contest in 2017.
