‘One of the best moments in MMA history’: UFC fans left in disbelief as Jiri Prochazka submits Glover Teixeira with 30 seconds of their five-round thriller remaining to claim the light-heavyweight crown… and the Brazilian is already calling for a rematch

  • Jiri Prochazka emerged victorious after a dramatic clash with Glover Teixeira
  • The Czech fighter submitted Teixiera with 30 seconds of their bout remaining
  • He has become the new UFC light-heavyweight champion in the process
  • Prochazka was behind on the scorecards when he produced the late stoppage

Jiri Prochazka submitted Glover Teixeira in the final 30 seconds of a dramatic encounter at UFC 275 to become the new light-heavyweight champion on Saturday night.

Teixeira became the oldest fighter to win a UFC title when he toppled Jan Blachowicz back in October, and the Brazilian was close to making a successful first defence out in Singapore.

In a thrilling contest which some fans have branded the greatest light-heavweight scrap of all time, Teixeira was narrowly leading on two judges’ scorecards heading into the fifth and final round.

But in the final 30 seconds, Prochazka left fans stunned when he forced a submission on the ground to mark a new era in the 205lbs division.

He has also become the first ever Czech fighter to win a UFC title, with fans quickly rushing to social media to express their disbelief at both the contest and result.

One wrote on Twitter: ‘One of the best moments in MMA history. That fight was unbelievable’.

Another posted: ‘Mad respect for both fighters for this incredible fight! #UFC275’

A third commented: ‘Unbelievable finish to a special fight. Jiri’s round management and poor decision making would have cost him if it had gone to the score cards because glover was winning that contest.’

While one simply asked: ‘What the f*** did I just watch?’

UFC heavyweight star Tanner Boser also chipped in by saying: ‘Prochazka vs Teixeira was one of the greatest title fights of all time. That was madness. Both men are incredible. We knew that, but wow. Thank you guys.’

Prochazka, who practices bushido, has now won 13 contests on the bounce after his dramatic last-gasp victory over Teixeira.

‘It’s amazing and I’m glad,’ he said in the Octagon after his latest triumph. ‘It was a true war. Glover is a true warrior.’

Teixeira, meanwhile, is already calling for a rematch after losing his title right at the death on Saturday night.

The 42-year-old simply wrote on Twitter: ‘Rematch?? @jiri_bjp @danawhite @ufc’.
