UK weather: Isle of Wight festival-goers enjoy temperatures of 23C

Festival revellers on the Isle of Wight are basking in temperatures of 23C today with the warmer weather set to bring on a heatwave next week.

Public health officials are preparing to issue heatwave alerts as the mercury climbs to a sweltering 30C, with Britain facing temperatures as hot as in Marbella and Gibraltar on Wednesday.

Although today began with a cool start, temperatures are set to peak at 24C or 25C degrees in London and the south east later on and tomorrow.

High pressure over the UK has brought with it hotter weather, with Wednesday predicted as the hottest day of the year so far.

Many partygoers chose to wear entirely gold outfits to celebrate the festival’s golden anniversary this weekend.

Public Health England are considering issuing warnings about the heatwave early next week, reports the Guardian.

Dr Owen Landeg, of Public Health England, said: ‘Now is a really good time to think about what you can do to protect you and your family and friends’ health during summer.

‘For some people, such as older people, those with underlying health conditions and those with young children, the summer heat can bring real health risks. That’s why we’re urging everyone to keep an eye on those you know who may be at risk this summer.

‘If you’re able, ask if your friends, family or neighbours need any support. And if you’re going outside for a prolonged period, remember UV is high at this time of year so think how the sun affects you and what you’d do to make sure you don’t get burned.’

Across the weekend temperatures will stay in the mid to low-20s, with some spots hitting the high 20s on Monday. As mid-week approaches the temperatures will rise even higher, and it is likely some areas will hit 30C.

Chief Meteorologist Frank Saunders said: ‘As warmer air from the continent moves towards the UK from Wednesday, temperatures will climb into the mid to high 20s quite widely, even in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

‘By this stage, some places in England and Wales will very likely top 30 Celsius – it’s not unlikely somewhere could reach 32 Celsius. With almost wall-to-wall sunshine we’ll certainly be looking at conditions which many of us would call a heatwave.’

PHE’s heatwave plan advises that during a heatwave the public should stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, avoid extreme physical exertion and eat cold foods such as salads or fruits with a high water content.

Children playing outdoors for more than 20 minutes should wear loose, light-coloured clothing and sunscreen. They should not take part in vigorous physical activity in temperatures about 30C.

The highest temperature so far this year was 29.1C, recorded in St James’s Park on April 19, and it is likely to be beaten on Wednesday. The average for this time of year is just 21C in London and the south east, and 17C in Scotland.

The warm weather is set to stay as the high pressure continues to dominate throughout the week.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly said: ‘With high pressure firmly in charge, the warm and dry weather is here to stay until at least the end of June and although it is still some way off, we could be looking at similar conditions continuing into the start of July.’
