University of Wollongong Solstice Bench art installation

Why this bewildering bench at an Aussie university has Twitter stumped – as its shadow doesn’t match its shape

  • A Solstice Bench changes its shadow twice a year at University of Wollongong
  • The ‘magic’ bench usually shows half-circle cutouts of the rungs in its shadow
  • Twice a year on Summer and Winter Solstice the rung shadows appear straight

A ‘magic’ bench amazed Twitter users for its strange shadow that changes with the Summer and Winter Solstice.

Associate Professor at Wollongong University Julie Kiggins shared a photo of the odd Solstice Bench on Wednesday.

The bench’s shadow shows completely straight lines through its seat despite having half circle cut out of each rung.

Ms Kiggins said the shadow lines up straight just twice a year with the Summer and Winter Solstice.

The bench is located between Building 67 and Building 40 at the University of Wollongong campus.

Ms Kiggins post received over 300,000 with commenters amazed by the ‘very specific sundial’.

‘This is what we need to hear about. You should run tours next solstice,’ one commenter joked.

‘That is very cool. I often work on this campus and didn’t know about the bench,’ another said.

‘That’s very clever,’ another wrote.

Other commenters called for the unique piece’s artist to be recognised on a plaque.
