Unmarried parents will finally be entitled to crucial bereavement benefits when their partner dies.

Until now, surviving parents could only claim up to £9,800 across 18 months in Bereavement Support Payments if married or in a civil partnership at the time of their partner’s death.

Those not entitled to Child Benefit are paid smaller amounts. Under new draft rules, they will now only need to have lived with the deceased on the date of death and have dependent children. The policy will apply retroactively from August 30, 2018, the month the Supreme Court ordered a change.
