A rising tennis star has died suddenly while on a trip in the United States.

Carolina Lewis, from New Zealand, was visiting Washington DC when she unexpectedly died last Monday. 

The 23-year-old, who played division one tennis in the US for Kansas State University, is the niece of former Wimbledon finalist Chris Lewis.

Chris Lewis has described her death as ‘one of life’s unthinkable and cruellest moments’.

‘Carolina, we all love you. Thank you for the special times we’ve shared, the wonderful and precious memories you’ve given us, and for the love we all have in our hearts for you — a love that will hold true and strong for the rest of our lives. You will always be with us,’ he told the New Zealand Herald.

Her sister Carolina, who is also a promising tennis player, has made an emotional tribute to her older sister.

‘Carolina was loved by so many and made an impact in everyone’s life. She was an exceptional daughter, sister, and friend.

‘She was the light to everyone’s day, and there was never a moment without smiles and laughter when we were with her. Everyone who knew her in her short 23 years of life will always cherish the memories we made with her.’

The stunning brunette was an avid traveller and sportsperson. 

She had hoped to become a sports journalist and recently graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Journalism. 

Her family has created a Givealittle page to raise money for her funeral.
