At least 25 people, believed to be mostly school children, have been killed after a bus crash in India. 

The bus plunged into a canal in the Mandya district of Karnataka, India with the only survivor believed to be a boy who jumped from the vehicle. 

Among the confirmed dead are a woman and a child.

Images emerging from the scene show locals trying to pull the submerged bus from the water with ropes. 

People wait anxiously on the banks of the canal where bodies were eventually laid out. 

‘There is no clarity on the number of deaths as all those who were inside the bus have died,’ police said. 

It is not known what caused the deadly crash that locals say was at around 12.25pm local time. 

Mandya is about 100km away from the Karnataka state capital, Bengaluru.
