Urgent evacuation of a city street amid fears a glass pane could fall from the 18th floor of a skyrise building and smash onto the ground below

A busy city street has been evacuated and closed amid fears a glass pane could fall from the 18th floor of a skyrise building and smash onto the ground below. 

Emergency services are at Allianz Centre building on Market Street in Sydney’s CBD following reports of a panel of glass had come loose. 

Police, ambulance and fire brigade officers are on the scene as roads are closed to motorists and pedestrians.

‘Market Street, between Clarence and Sussex Streets is closed in both directions to vehicles,’ police said.

‘Between Kent and Sussex Streets is closed to pedestrians.’

A spokeswoman for Fire and Rescue NSW said access to the loose glass panel is difficult. 

Building management is currently with glaziers and engineers on the scene.
