An error also occurred when attempting to direct message another user.

Instagram was down on the web browser too, with the message ‘oops, an error occurred’ appearing on the screen.

Others reported seeing a Facebook-branded notification which said ‘Sorry, something went wrong’.

Disappointed users took to Twitter to vent their frustration about the outage, with a series of tweets under #instagramdown.

The Facebook-owned said they were aware of the crash but did not explain the cause of the problem.

‘We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing their Instagram accounts. We’re working quickly to fix the issue,’ Instagram said.

Thousands of users across the globe reported the crash on Down Detector, with most complaining of issues about the feed.

Reports first came into the website at about 4.30am but jumped to more than 55,000 reports by 8am.

The application appeared to be back to normal by about 9am.

The crash stretched across Europe, America and South America with users in Australia, Japan and India also sighting problems.

This is the second time Instagram has crashed within a week after the app went down for several hours late last week.

Instagram was rocked by one of it’s worst global outages in March when it crashed for more than 14 hours, along with Facebook and WhatsApp.

The outage comes as gamers claim they were unable to access the PlayStation Network.
