Utah teen methodically shot dead mom and three siblings

A Utah teenager charged with killing his mother and three younger siblings is accused of ‘methodically’ shooting them dead one by one as they returned home over a five hour period. 

Colin ‘CJ’ Haynie, 16, has been charged as an adult over the murder of his mother and three siblings – aged aged 12, 14 and 15 – and the attempted killing of his father.

Prosecutors have revealed the teen skipped school in order to carry out the horror killings on January 17 in the family’s home near the small town of Grantsville, west of Salt Lake City. 

Authorities, who do not yet have a motive for the slayings, have released few details regarding the case until now.

Investigators have been piecing together a timeline of the crime spree ever since Haynie was taken into custody at a hospital on the day of the killings. 

Police were able to obtain brief details from Haynie himself, as well as get statements from his father as he recovered from his injuries in hospital.

Authorities say the killing spree started when Haynie shot dead his mother Consuelo Alejandra ‘Alex’ Haynie, 52, and 12-year-old sister Milan when they came into the family home at about 1pm. 

His 15-year-old sister Alexis Haynie was shot dead an hour later after returning home from school. 

Police say Matthew Haynie, 14, was then shot in the head when he came home from school at about 5.17pm.

About an hour later, his 50-year-old father Colin Haynie arrived home and was shot in the leg when he walked in the door.  

Investigators say the father was eventually able to get the gun away from Haynie following a struggle. 

The teen then allegedly told his father that his mother and siblings were dead and his ‘intention was to kill everyone in the home except himself’.

A neighbor called 911 at about 7pm to say she’d gone to the home and Haynie had told her he had killed his mother and siblings. 

The neighbor and her husband were driving Haynie and his injured father to the hospital while she was calling 911. 

Haynie was taken into custody at the hospital. 

His older brother, Danny Haynie, 24, was not home when the shootings occurred. 

The father said, via a statement from a lawyer, that the ordeal was ‘nearly unbearable’. He asked for privacy as he tries to ‘heal himself and those he loves, including both of his sons’.  

Funerals for the mother, her two daughters and son were scheduled to be held on Friday.  

Police believe Haynie used a family handgun to carry out the attacks. 

They are currently examining computers and cell phones to try and determine a motive.

The teen is expected to make his first court appearance on Monday. 

He is charged with 10 felonies: Four counts of aggravated murder, one count of attempted murder and five counts of felony discharged of a firearm.
