Whether you plan on celebrating Valentine’s Day a deux or ignoring it completely, it’s a great excuse to buy some new lingerie.

Thankfully, unabashedly sexy undies are back – and they come in just one crucial colour: black.

Forget bright red bodysuits with uncomfortable straps, or gimmicky pastel bralettes with heart motifs but no support. Top designers have thrown their weight behind the most reliable, wearable and alluring shade of all.

From Balenciaga to Christian Siriano, the Spring/Summer 2025 catwalks were awash with delicate black lace.

Nina Ricci’s show featured sheer lace dresses and bodysuits, one of which actor Anya Taylor-Joy sported recently for a Tiffany & Co event.

And February’s hottest star, Renee Zellweger, proved that the look isn’t just for the bedroom by wearing a one-shoulder, sheer black lace gown by Saint Laurent at the new Bridget Jones film premiere in Paris.

It’s a cliché, but there’s no one like the French for truly seductive well-made underwear. Simone Perele founded her lingerie brand in Paris in 1948 and today the company is run by her grandchildren.

The beautiful set (£150) featured here is made using the house’s signature floral embroidery.

Or for a British take on French elegance, head to Fleur of England. Its designs are hand-sketched in the UK by founder Fleur, while the eyelash lace is sourced from a family-run business in Lyon.

The Boux Avenue lace bodysuit, with its high neck and ‘eyelash’ lace edging, could have come straight from the catwalk but is a steal at £50.

You could even wear it as a top for your Valentine’s date with wide-leg black trousers and, for added romance, a pair of heart earrings from By Alona.

Indeed, Boux Avenue says it sells a black bra every two minutes – while red bras are less in favour, selling only once every 12 minutes.

If you despair of fiddly clasps and poppers, look to Primark’s new range. This pretty, plunging lace bralette features a magnetic front closure, and it’s only £10.

Even the supermarkets are excelling – take George at Asda’s upmarket Studio Edit line. This matching black lace bra and high-leg knickers is £24.

Looking for all-out, date night drama? Try a lace, long-sleeve midi dress by Asos. With a built-in bodysuit, it’s too gorgeous to be worn only in the bedroom.
