  • Veggie Noodle Co has recalled its Cece’s Veggie Co brand Fresh Veggie Ramen with Chicken Broth
  • There are fears the separately packaged egg may be contaminated with listeria
  • The eggs are produced by Almark Foods of Gainesville, Georgia, which was implicated in an earlier reported outbreak
  • One person has died and six others have been sickened in Florida, Maine, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Texas

Vegetable ramen is the latest product to be recalled across the US due to a listeria outbreak linked to hard-boiled eggs.

Veggie Noodle Co, based in Texas, recalled its Cece’s Veggie Co brand Fresh Veggie Ramen with Chicken Broth sold at retail stores nationwide because the separately packaged egg may be contaminated with the bacteria, according to a release from the US Food and Drug Administration.

The eggs are supplied by Almark Foods, which has sickened seven people across five states, including a newborn who was infected while the mother was pregnant, but survived.

Four people have been hospitalized, including a Texas patient who ultimately died.

Cece’s Veggie Co brand ramen comes in 11.5-ounce packages with UPC code 5228700653, according to a notice on Veggie Noodle Co’s website.

The company is recalling products with all expiration dates, and sold at supermarket chains including Whole Foods Market, H-E-B, Albertsons and Vons.

Customers are urged not to consume the noodle bowls and either throw them out or return them to the store where they were purchased for a refund.

Anyone with questions is asked to call Veggie Noodle at (512) 200-3337 between Monday and Friday, from 9am CT to 5pm CT.

Veggie Noodle Co is the latest company to be affected by the listeria outbreak that originated from hard-boiled eggs produced by Georgia-based Almark Foods.

Several chains including including Trader Joe’s, Costco, Kroger, and Fresh Thyme have recalled hard-boiled eggs from their stores.

Last week, Almark expanded its recall to include all hard-boiled egg products from a facility in Gainesville, which led to four companies recalling their products made with Almark eggs.

Cases have been reported in Florida, Maine, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Texas, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Infections occurred between April 2017 to November 12 and those who became sick range in age from less than one year old to 82 years old.

Of the five people the CDC interviewed, four said they ate products containing hard-boiled eggs the month before they became ill.

Three of them said the hard-boiled eggs were either in deli salads bought at grocery stores or in salads from restaurants.

Listeriosis is a serious infection that is typically caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.

The most common foods are unpasteurized milk, soft cheeses, vegetables and meat products such as deli meat.

Symptoms usually begin one to four weeks after exposure and include headache, loss of confusion, muscle aches and fever.

Pregnant women who are infected can go into premature labor, have a stillbirth or suffer a miscarriage.

Additionally, those on dialysis are 50 times more likely to contract a listeria infection, the CDC says.

About 1,600 people fall ill with the infection every year in the US and about 260 people die, according to the CDC.
