A UK vet has gone viral on TikTok after sharing a video revealing which five dogs breeds he would ‘personally consider getting’.

The creator, known as @ben.the.vet, listed the pros and cons of his top favourite breeds in the clip which racked up nearly 42,000 views.

According to the vet, greyhounds are ‘gentle’ and their are many in need of loving home after their racing careers finish and border terrier’s as they are ‘affectionate’  and form ‘strong attachments with people’.

Starting from five and working backwards he listing the greyhound at number five saying: ‘They may not look very cuddly but they are really gentle and their are so many of them needing home after their racing careers end.’

He added that they commonly suffer with ‘very bad teeth’ so he said ‘put in the effort from the beginning to get their ‘teeth brushed.’

Vet Ben’s top five picks

  1. Mongrel/mixed-breed
  2. Labrador
  3. Hungarian wire-haired vizsla
  4. Border terrier
  5. Greyhound

He continued: ‘They will happily plod along on a walk but they would like the opportunity to sprint around so make sure you give them that opportunity.’

Next up he listed border terrier as his fourth choice saying: ‘Next up is the scruffy little boarder terrier, for me if I was to get a small dog they would be my top choice, in my experience they are quite affectionate little dogs and compared to other terriers maybe they form slightly strong attachments with people. ‘

He also admitted the pooches were ‘quite robust health wise’ but some are prone to luxating patella.

Luxating patella a condition in which the patella, or kneecap, dislocates or moves out of its normal location.

Ben advises people speak to the breeder to see if the dog parents had any problems with the condition

Number three on his list is the Hungarian wire-haired vizsla because they have a ‘really lovely temperament.’

His second dog bread choice is the Labrador because they 'affectionate', 'loyal', 'funny' and 'gentle'

He said: ‘This is a little bit of a niche choice because there are not many of them around but the ones I met have a lovely temperament.

‘Again moderate and unexaggerated in their appearance but they can be prone to some joint issues such as hip dysplasia.’

In dogs, hip dysplasia is an abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause arthritis of the joints.

‘They do need lots and lots of exercise and stimulation so I would only get one if I had the time to take them out for two long walks a day.’

His second choice is the Labrador because they ‘affectionate’, ‘loyal’, ‘funny’ and ‘gentle.’

He said: ‘Again they are moderate in their appearance, they are not exaggerated in anyway, exaggerated is bad for health so thats good, however I am slightly conflicted about them because they are unfortunately to a few different problems.

He continued: ‘One of their biggest issues is joint problems so I would definitely make sure both parents have been hip and elbow scored.’

‘They are also very prone to getting fat so I would be extremely careful to keep them trim.’

His number one choice of pooch is the mongrel as they dog is less prone to diseases.

The downside of a mongrel is the unpredictability in terms of adult size, temperament and activity levels that you get with a pedigree dog

He said: ‘Number one for me is the mongrel, and when I say mongrel I mean proper liquorish all sorts mixed breed where you cant tell what they are.’

‘The downside is the unpredictability in terms of adult size, temperament and activity levels that you get with a pedigree dog but what you do get is diverse genetics who is, by virtue if being less in-bread, is less prone to diseases that have an inherited component and for me as a vet thats very important.’

At the beginning of the clip he started with a disclaimer as not offend anyone.

He said: ‘I am a vet and here are five dog breeds I would consider if I was to get one. Now I am definitely not telling everyone to go out and get these five dog breeds.

‘And I am also not saying that these of the five possible healthiest dog breeds because every dog breed has some issues that they are prone to, these are also not the only five I would consider.’

He continued: ‘Remember it is just my opinion and you are fully entitled to disagree, so disclaimers out of the way.. here it goes.’
