‘This extraordinary novel gives the reader the heart-to-heart testimony of one of our finest writers,’ said Michal Shavit of Jonathan Cape.

‘We are incredibly proud to be publishing this book.’

Amis, whose best-known works are Money and London Fields, revealed he was working on the novel in 2016.

He told friends: ‘Larkin died in 1985, Bellow died in 2005 and Hitch died in 2011, and that gives me a theme – death – and a bit more freedom, and fiction is freedom.’ Publication is in September.
