Vfl Bochum star Ganvoula lifts MASSIVE trophy after beating Borussia Dortmund in PRE-SEASON win

Vfl Bochum star Silvere Ganvoula is hilariously presented with a MASSIVE trophy after scoring in friendly against Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund as the German minnows make a big deal about their PRE-SEASON win

  • Borussia Dortmund suffered a shock defeat to VFL Bochum in pre-season
  • The match was to decide the Cup der Traditionen, a pre-season tournament
  • MSV Duisburg, who were set to compete too, dropped out after Covid positives
  • The likes of Marco Reus and Julian Brandt were fielded, but the favourites lost

Borussia Dortmund missed-out on the biggest trophy of the season on Saturday, though it was the cup’s comically large size rather than prestige which caught the eye.

Newly promoted Bundesliga side Vfl Bochum ran-out 3-1 winners in the pre-season match on Saturday despite the German giants fielding the likes of Marco Reus and Julian Brandt.

The victory saw striker Silvere Ganvoula lift the Cup der Traditionen (Cup of Traditions), an annual three-team tournament staged before the season kicks-off properly.

VFL Bochum were crowned Cup der Traditionen champions, earning a gigantic trophy

This year MSV Duisburg, who play in the German third tier, were scheduled to host and compete in the competition.

However, they were forced to drop-out late after three players tested positive for coronavirus, setting up one all-or-nothing clash for the gigantic cup.

It was a disappointing way to begin the 2021-22 campaign for the favourites, but BVB will be focused on more important – if much smaller – silverware this season.

New Dortmund boss Marco Rose started a first-team line-up featuring young talents like Gio Reyna and new signing Gregor Kobel on his debut, before sending out a XI of under-23 players for the second half.

Soma Novothny, Silvere Ganvoula and Herbert Bockhorn scored quick-fire first-half goals to charge ahead, before Marco Pasalic fired in a consolation in the 83rd minute.

Dortmund get their season underway against third-tier side Wehen Wiesbaden in the DFB Pokal in August, when they look set to have Erling Haaland at their disposal as the club continue to ward-off interest from Chelsea.
