Road registry charges man $18.50 just to make an appointment about his driver’s licence – and their justification for it will shock you
- A man has claimed VicRoads charged him $18.50 just to make an appointment
- He claims they charged him when he went to change his interstate registration
- In a letter back, the corporation said they were charging for more services now
Drivers are being stung with exorbitant fees just to book an appointment to renew their car registration.
The government has started charging road users for services it previously offered for free in a bid to ‘strengthen its financial position’.
A motorist said on Thursday that he complained to VicRoads, the Victorian road management corporation run by the state government, after being forced to pay $18.50 to book an appointment time.

He told 3AW that he went into VicRoads to change over the registration of a new car he had purchased interstate.
The VicRoads office was empty, with three workers behind the counter and not one customer, Trevor claimed.
He was then told he would need to book an appointment for later that afternoon and was asked to pay $18.50.
Trevor said the afternoon meeting took 10 minutes and had left him out of pocket.
Enraged, he sent a letter to the corporation asking why it had cost him almost 20 dollars to simply book in an appointment.
The letter he received back explained that they had started lumping fees on previously free services.

‘VicRoads has introduced fees to previously uncharged services as part of its measure to strengthen its financial position through reducing debt and restraining Government spending.
‘The fee will also create a source of funds to allow VicRoads to invest in improving transaction services,’ a letter from VicRoads said.
On air, Trevor questioned how the corporation could get away with it, labeling it: ‘the biggest double dip I’ve ever seen.’
VicRoads have been contacted by Daily Mail Australia for comment.
