Victorian Liberal MP caught drink driving over four times the limit

A Victorian Liberal MP has resigned as shadow parliamentary secretary after he was busted drink driving.

Western Victoria MP Simon Ramsay was almost four times the legal limit and blew 0.19 when he was pulled over by police at Barwon Heads on the state’s Bellarine Peninsula on Saturday night.

He contacted the Geelong Advertiser on Sunday to admit he had made a big mistake, which he now regrets.

‘I’m not hiding from anything. I feel like an idiot,’ Mr Ramsay said.

‘I’m really gutted that I did such a thing and the actions are inexcusable. The consequences will haunt me forever.’

Mr Ramsay has informed state opposition leader Matthew Guy, who accepted his resignation as shadow parliamentary secretary, the publication reported.

It’s understood Mr Ramsay had been drinking at at a football match in the area earlier in the day.

It follows Mr Ramsay’s recent break up with federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson following a long-term relationship.

Mr Ramsay has represented the Western Victoria electorate as MP since 2010.

On his website, Mr Ramsay describes himself as a Geelong local and a passionate advocate for rural and regional communities throughout Western Victoria. 

‘I’m working hard as a Member for Western Victoria to make it the best place to live,’ the bio on his Facebook page states.

He has also served as shadow assistant minister for agriculture and currently owns a beef grazing property.
