Video shows a cop saving a dog from a frozen pond

A New Jersey police officer risked falling into an icy pond to save dog who’d fallen in late last Friday night. 

Police officers in Hopewell Township responded to a call of a dog trapped in a backyard pond that had frozen over, according to the department’s Facebook page. 

Video of the rescue shows the dog, Nisel, attempting to exit the freezing pond as snow falls around him.

Officer Robert Vorhees volunteered to be fastened to a rope to crawl out onto the ice and towards the opening to save the terrified pup as he attempts to get his paws onto land

It appears that he isn’t able to get his paws onto land, and keeps slipping back into the chilly water.

Video shows him inching  forward on his hands and knees with a rope tied around his waist before cautiously reaching out towards Nisel.

 ‘He’s coming, Nisel,’ the dog’s owner, who hasn’t been named,’ can be heard saying throughout the clip.

Nisel then quickly stands up and runs out of the frame - clearly anxious to get as far away from the glacial pond as fast as his paws can manage. The dog's owner then rushes up to Officer Vorhees to thank him and give him a hug

Once he’s got a hand on Nisel’s collar he manages to pull him out of the water and onto the snow.

‘We’ve got to warm this dog up,’ Officer Vorhees says to the dog’s owner, who then quickly embraces him and thanks him profusely. 

‘I’ve got a puppy at home,’ I was like, crying,’ Vorhees said.
