Video shows Fort Worth police chief chase down suspect through backyards after he fled accident

Dramatic video from a police helicopter shows Fort Worth’s top cop chase down a suspect who fled the scene of a car accident and ran through backyards and alleyways before he gave up.

Fort Worth Police Chief Ed Kraus was driving down a freeway just before 10:30am on Friday when he heard on his two-way radio that officers were searching for a man who fled the site of a car crash nearby.

Kraus, who was driving near Interstate 20 and Campus Drive, decided to join the search, which included several officers on the ground as well as an airborne helicopter, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The suspect, Jesus Martinez Guerrero, 28, ended up running toward Kraus, 52, according to investigators.

When he saw Kraus, Guerrero turned and ran toward the opposite direction, police said.

‘The bad guy decides to take a wrong turn and runs toward the chief,’ said Fort Worth police officer Buddy Calzada.

During the foot chase, both men jumped over two fences.

‘The bad guy jumped the fence and the chief jumped the fence to keep going after him,’ Calzada told KDFW-TV.

‘He runs through the middle of a yard, and the suspect jumps another fence.

‘So what does the chief do? He jumped the fence with him.’

Finally, as Kraus gained ground and was closing in on the suspect, Guerrero, he slowed down.

‘At that point in time, the chief started closing in on him, and I think he realized at that point, I’m not going to make it,’ Calzada said.

‘I’m not going to get away from this.’

Eventually, Kraus placed handcuffs on Guerrero and took him into custody.

The police chief was reportedly hesitant to share this story, but only agreed after prodding from his subordinates, according to reports.

Kraus was named full-time chief of police earlier this month after a six-month period in which he was interim chief.
