Viewers blast Love Island Australia as a ‘new low in Australian TV’

The highly-anticipated premiere of Love Island Australia finally hit screens on Sunday night.

But it seems many were left less than impressed by the sex-minded show, with one viewer describing it as a ‘historic low in Australian television’.

At the beginning of the episode, female contestants were made to wear bikinis and stilettos as they stood in line to be selected out by their male co-stars – a scene which former Bachelorette Georgia Love described as ‘absolutely abhorrent’ on her Twitter account.

‘I am so appalled by Love Island I’m not even going to justify a worthwhile tweet about it. Absolutely abhorrent,’ she blasted.

Later in the show, the male stars got together to discuss who was the ‘hottest’ female contestant, before the show’s narrator stated: ‘Over by the pool, the boys engaged in the time-honoured gentleman’s tradition of rating girls.’

However, it wasn’t just the show’s purported sexism that attracted the ire of viewers – with many also taking a dislike to the cast.

Several of the show’s contestants boasted about their physical appearances and shamelessly name-dropped celebrities with whom they have allegedly partied, including Justin Bieber and Katy Perry.

Contestant Natasha even shockingly stated: ‘I have dated doctors and surgeons and millionaires. I think it is important to be picky because I don’t want a toilet cleaner. It is a deal breaker if a guy doesn’t have a boat.’

Explicit comments were also made by several of the stars, with one female competitor describing herself as a ‘sicko’ for wanting to listen to her co-stars have sex.

Contestants Eden and Erin became the first couple to lock lips on the show, sharing a steamy bedtime smooch.

And it appears the hunky prison officer hopes the pair will be first to fornicate on camera, saying privately: ‘We could be the first to christen the villa’.

Several joined Georgia Love in blasting the show on social media, with one replying to her Tweet: ‘I’m a reality show fanatic but I will not be watching Love Island. Thanks for your honest opinion. It justifies the previews. Utter garbage’.

Another shared on social media: ‘Channel 9 should be ashamed screening this disgusting show. A new historic low in Australian television.’

However, it appeared some viewers would still be tuning in for the rest of the season, with one writing: ‘This is next level awful yet I can’t stop watching #LoveIslandAU’.

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Channel Nine for comment.
