Virgin Australia introduces Wi-Fi service for LA flights

Virgin Australia announced their newest solution to curing dreaded boredom on long-haul flights to America. 

Wi-Fi will be available for passengers flying from Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane to Los Angeles for the journey.

Despite the luxury being free on domestic flights, it will cost $20 for passengers to use for the entire flight, Australian Business Traveller revealed.

For shorter routes including Sydney to Melbourne or Brisbane to Sydney, Wi-Fi will cost $9 a flight. 

The data will be approved for internet browsing, emails and messaging however is not allowed for voice calls or streaming videos due to restricting connection speeds.

Interruptions while connecting to Wi-Fi are also likely to occur during the flight.

‘(Service) is currently impacted by satellite availability and typically has two services interruptions during the flight,’ a Virgin Australia spokesperson told the publication.

‘These interruptions are likely to occur at four and one-and-a-half hours prior to landing at LAX and may result in a 30 to 60 minute outage.’

Four of Virgin’s jets have been fitted with the technology after testing the service in late 2017 as a free service on domestic flights.

‘Most of us use our phones on a daily, if not hourly, basis, meaning it can be incredibly disruptive to have extended periods of time when you can’t connect with friends, family, colleagues or what’s going on in the world,’ Virgin Australia Airlines’ group executive Rob Sharp told News Corp. 

Qantas is reportedly not expected to introduce Wi-Fi on international flights until 2019.
