Vype e-cigarettes sold at Sainsbury’s have been urgently recalled over fears they could catch on fire.

The battery in the e-cigarettes can short circuit, posing a fire risk, the manufacturer warns.

In a statement released by the company, ‘a small number of consumers’ reported concerns with their Vype eTank Pro devices.

Vype is asking any customers who bought the device, which sold for £24.99, to return it for a replacement.

According to the charity Electrical Safety First, around five house fires occur a day in England as a result of domestic electrical goods.

‘Potential for the battery to short circuit, which may pose a fire risk’

A statement released by the company states: ‘At Vype, our consumers are central to everything we do and we never compromise on quality or safety.

‘A small number of consumers have brought to our attention some issues with their Vype eTank Pro devices.

‘These issues relate to the potential for the battery to short circuit in particular product batches, which may pose a fire risk.

‘If you are in possession of a Vype eTank Pro and/or a standalone battery for the Vype eTank Pro, please make sure you check the product code.’

To check the product code, unscrew the battery’s clearomiser to find the number at the top of the battery.

Devices purchased from Sainsbury’s have the code on the back of the Vype eTank Pro kits.
