  • The man had reportedly gained access after someone gave him security codes

A Western Australian charity has busted a baking bandit after they caught a ‘homeless’ man making muffins in their kitchen.

Staff at Earthwise in Subiaco noticed something was wrong after their power bills began increasing by around $300, according to WA Today.

Setting up security cameras, the organisation discovered a man in his sixties had been entering the kitchen at night to create batches of the baked goods.

The two-year mystery was unravelled after volunteers followed a series of clues, including accounts from nearby office workers who claimed to smell muffins in the morning.

Staff then talked to a homeless man who slept near the building and told them about a man entering the building at night, according to Post Newspapers.

‘He told us a bloke was coming after midnight on Sundays and Wednesdays and would come in and out and leave by 6am,’ Volunteer Coordinator Stephen Ross said.

The organisation then set up cameras hoping to catch the baker, with recorded footage showing him making ‘dozens and dozens’ of muffins.

The man was suspected to have made the muffins to sell to office workers in the city.

Post Newspapers Managing Editor Brett Christian told 6PR radio station that the man was also caught baking in his underwear.

‘They set up a camera and sure enough there was some guy standing there baking muffins in his underdacks,’ he said.

The charity said they would not involve police as the incidents had stopped since he was caught on camera.

He is believed  to have gained access to the building’s kitchen two years ago after being given the security codes by someone.
