A popular Korean BBQ restaurant in Sydney’s inner-west has been forced to slash the price of its meals to just $1 to attract customers – as small businesses try desperately to stay alive during the city’s crippling lockdown.

Wagyu House Korean BBQ Restaurant on Parramatta Road, Croydon, is offering $1 dinner and lunch boxes on certain days – but have asked customers to pay as much as they feel is fair in order sustain the business.

‘These days we find people are really happy when they take home our dinner and lunch boxes, which makes us happy too,’ a post on their Facebook page reads.

‘I don’t know if we can survive [this lockdown], but I think we must try something to over come this hard time,’ another post reads.

The business is clearly feeling the affects of Covid-19 and is hoping the lunch special can drum up business until Sydney’s lockdown ends, at this stage, on August 28.

Another restaurant is also trying to help the hospitality industry by offering cut-price meals for those employed in the sector, many who have seen shifts and wages sliced.

Henrietta Charcoal Chicken in Surry Hills is offering their $18 new chicken box for just $10 to hospitality workers.

The appropriately titled ‘Flip the Bird Box’ is sticking to Covid and giving laid-off workers a bit of joy during lockdown.

Ibrahim Moubadder, Co-Founder of Henrietta, said that he was trying to do his bit to help the hospitality community.

‘Everyone knows hospitality staff are mostly out of the job, and the government is supporting as much as they can but after rent and phone and other bills you’re not left with much at all,’ Mr Moubadder said.

‘So it’s the least we can do to give people a very substantial meal at a fraction of the cost. I am in hospitality and I see my staff struggling so if I can help in any way why not.

”We aren’t looking to make profits during this time, but if we can keep some of our staff employed we are happy’.
