A Waitrose shopper says he was greeted with a live worm in a piece of fresh fish he bought from the supermarket.

Josh Torlot, 21, claims he spotted a ‘small worm-like thing wriggling’ as he prepared to put a piece of cod in the frying pan.

He’d bought the fish from the fresh fish counter at a branch of the upmarket supermarket in Sanderstead, in Croydon, South London.

The supermarket has apologised for the ‘harmless’ nematode worm, which they say occur naturally in cod.

Torlot, who works as a quantity surveyor, told Femail that he went to the store to grab some lunch and opted for a piece of fish from the fresh fish counter.

He explains: ‘The staff member wrapped and gave the fish to me. I then got my other bits of food for lunch and proceeded to pay for them.

‘When I got home, I put the cod in the pan to cook it and noticed a small worm-like thing wriggling.’

He says he ‘managed to take it out of the fish and place it onto the kitchen work-top’ before adding that it ‘continued to wriggle and move about’.

The video shows the thin yellow worm writhing around, clearly alive, on his kitchen work-surface.

Alarmed at what the worm might be, he started researching it on the internet and says he became convinced it was a tapeworm.

He then tweeted the upscale supermarket for a response.

He said: ‘I contacted Waitrose with my concerns as to why this has happened. They have endeavoured to get back to me after their investigation into it.’

MailOnline contacted Waitrose for comment.

A spokesperson for the store told Femail: ‘Nematode worms occur naturally in cod and are harmless.

‘However, we are very sorry that this wasn’t spotted when the fish was being filleted – and we’ve apologised to Josh for the unpleasant experience.’
