Wanted – strict nanny with Victorian values:

As any parent will testify, it can be tough to lure a child away from the TV or computer.

But one couple have apparently found a rather extreme solution to the distractions of modern life – raising their son like a Victorian.

The unidentified parents have posted an online job advertisement for a £55,000-a-year nanny to help bring up their child using strict Victorian values.

A couple in Ascot, Berkshire are looking for a £55,000-a-year nanny to care for their seven-year-old son, who they want to grow up speaking the Queen’s English and ban him from accessing all types of computers and electronic gadgets (file photograph)

The unconventional advert lists a number of strict rules the nanny must follow, including only allowing their seven-year-old son to speak the Queen’s English and for him to have just one hour of playtime each day.

The job, in Ascot, Berkshire, has been listed on the Childcare.co.uk parenting website. It states that, in keeping with their Victorian ethos, the couple think it is important to show children minimal affection so they do not become spoilt.

The role requires the live-in nanny ‘to refrain from any contact other than shaking hands and a kiss on the head before bed if necessary’. It adds: ‘We are firm believers that children should be seen and not heard and believe this will help his development.’

The parents indicated that failure to follow these strict guidelines previously led to the dismissal of their former nanny.

They have apparently not been able to find a candidate willing to align their nannying techniques with their beliefs since, so are now looking online.

It was not clear last night if the advertisement was legitimate – or a possible wind-up. Responsibilities listed include bathing and dressing the child and helping him with his home schooling.

However, the boy is only allowed one hour a day to play and he must remain in his best dress until bedtime.

He is not allowed access to technology, such as computers or television, but can play with books and wooden toys.

The parents, who have requested to remain anonymous, say this is to ensure he spends his time becoming a respectable young man. They added: ‘We’re a traditional couple from a very traditional and patriotic family and are set on raising our children in a way similar to the Victorians. This is the vision we have for our son and it’s something which has moulded our family, and our relationships with other families/friends.

‘We know that the way we’re raising our son is not exactly conventional, however we believe that in the long run it will turn him into a reputable and virtuous adult that can make a real impact to the world we live in.’

The advert states that the salary will be around £55,000 a year, and the selected candidate will be entitled to 25 days holiday, plus bank holidays and sick days.

Richard Conway, founder of Childcare.co.uk, said: ‘Obviously, it’s up to parents how they raise their children, and we cater for all parent needs.

‘Plus, who knows, maybe the balance of traditional and modern values could be a positive thing.’
