Warriors G McCaw refusing to sign qualifying offer

Restricted free agent guard Patrick McCaw has refused to sign the Golden State Warriors’ $1.7 million qualifying offer and will miss the start of training camp.

McCaw has been hoping to receive a long-term deal from another team, but nothing has transpired. The Warriors would have three days to match any such offer sheet.

“We’re continuing to talk to his representatives,” Warriors general manager Bob Myers said Monday at the team’s media day. “We think the conversations have been cordial. We’ve been talking for most of the summer. We’re going to keep talking. Hopefully we get a resolution that works for him and us. We’ll have to get him here. That’s the plan now — to continue to work in that direction.”

McCaw has until Oct. 30 to accept the qualifying offer.

McCaw, who turns 23 next month, has spent his first two NBA seasons with the Warriors. He averaged 4.0 points in 57 games last season. His campaign was interrupted by a spinal injury on March 31 after suffering a hard fall against the Sacramento Kings.

Golden State has an opening on the training camp roster as it currently lists 19 players. For now, the team is willing to keep that spot open for McCaw.

“He plays the wing position, so we have to probably examine all the different wing possibilities,” Myers said. “There’s veterans and guys we will have in camp so a combination of that. The primary hope is we can get him here. My job is to give the coach and organization the best team we can. If that requires something else, that’s what we’ll have to do. But the focus is not to do that.”

Warriors coach Steve Kerr is not the least bit worried.

“We’ll just start camp and do what we always do,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “We’ll see where it all goes.”
