Was Kate Middleton’s royal wedding outfit a new Alexander McQueen?

The Duchess of Cambridge won widespread praise for her royal wedding look – widely believed to have been a McQueen coat she has previously worn on three high profile occasions.

However one royal watcher has claimed Kate – frequently praised for recycling her outfits at public engagements – was not wearing coat we had already seen her in the past, but a very similar lookalike.

Eagle-eyed Instagram user Jessica, who runs the account Royal Addicted 2, pointed out there was one subtle but important different between the old and new coat.

She noted that while the coat Kate, 36, wore to the wedding had three buttons on its sleeves, the one she wore to Princess Charlotte’s Christening – as well as other engagements – did not.

The wedding coat was also a ‘primrose yellow’, rather than the cream-colour of her original McQueen number.

While the subtle yellow hue is difficult to see in some of the images from the royal wedding, it is more obvious in photos where she is standing next to Charlotte, three, who was dressed in white, and in the official portraits released by Kensington Palace.

The Instagram user, who regularly posts about royal wardrobes, added that it would not be the first time Kate had bought or commissioned the same piece in two different colours.

The duchess also owns a Preen cocktail dress in red and black; an Emilia Wickstead dress in pink and blue and the same dress by favourite designer Amanda Wakeley in cream and grey.

The original McQueen coat, which features the same cut and flattering neckline as the royal wedding look, was previously worn by Kate to Princess Charlotte’s Christening in 2015.

For the occasion, the duchess styled the coat with a white hat.

The royal wore the piece a year later to Trooping the Colour in June 2016, pairing it with a pink hat.

She was seen most recently wearing it at the Passchendaele commemoration service during a visit to Belgium back in July last year.
