Waterfront mansion property set to sell for $6 million

A waterfront mansion in an exclusive suburb is expected to sell for a whopping $6 million – even though the new owners are expected to demolish it.

The seaside property with spectacular ocean views and a jungle inside it in the sought-after Auckland, New Zealand suburb of Westmere is expected to sell for $6 million, but its eccentric design means it fails to meet council regulations.

‘You walk in through the front door and it’s essentially like walking into a jungle, which is possibly not everyone’s cup of tea,’ real estate agent Angus Campbell told Stuff.

The current owners’ parents designed the house, and Campbell said they were ‘very creative artists in their own right’.

The two-storey, three-bedroom, two-bathroom house at 32 Rawene Ave was built in the 1980s.

Palm trees grow inside the house and there is dense foliage on the first storey.

A tiki hut sits outside the house on the edge of the Waitemata Harbour, and the 1,100sq m section is surrounded by palm and pohutakawa trees.

In the Barfoot and Thompson listing for the property, it is described as an ‘opportunity to build your dream home in a unique and spectacular fashion’.

‘Live the coastal lifestyle with the convenience of being so close to the city.’

The listing says the property is ‘surrounded by some of the finest homes in Auckland’.

‘What you’re buying is really the section,’ Campbell said.

‘The most likely scenario is that the original house will get bowled to build someone else’s dream home.’

The house isn’t the only quirky property in the area, as it sits near a zen sanctuary modeled on Asian temples.

Auckland Council estimates the property’s land value at $4.5 million, but that estimate was made in 2014.
