Everton forward Wayne Rooney was left with blood pouring down his face after he appeared to be elbowed by Bournemouth’s Simon Francis.

Rooney had to leave the pitch to receive medical treatment after the challenge, which came during the first half of the Cherries’ visit to Goodison Park on Saturday.

As Rooney walked from the field with Blues medical staff, the left side of the forward’s face was crimson as blood poured down from around his eye and on to his shirt.

Despite Francis appearing to apologise to Rooney after the challenge, the ex-England international complained to referee Martin Atkinson.

He then gesticulated to fourth official Jon Moss that he had been on the receiving end of an elbow, with video replays suggesting his complaints were justified.

But Francis escaped punishment from the matchday officials, who were booed down the tunnel at half time.

The Everton striker returned to the field after the injury was treated with a fresh, blood-free shirt and pair of shorts.

The incident was a rare moment of drama during a tepid first half at Goodison, as Everton sought to pick up their first win since the first day of the season.
