‘We need to do an awful lot more’: West Ham boss David Moyes blasts his club’s summer transfer activity as supporters are warned the team isn’t yet ready for the start of the Premier League

  • New signing Gianluca Scamacca won’t feature for the club on the weekend

David Moyes has warned West Ham supporters that his side aren’t ready for the start of the Premier League season as the London club prepare to welcome reigning champions Manchester City to the capital on Sunday.

The Scot was confident in his remarks even if he lacks confidence in his team ahead of the return of Premier League football as he demanded more from club chiefs in the current transfer market.

West Ham have so far been one of the league’s biggest movers in the transfer market having brought five players into the club already.

But Moyes conducted his feelings in his pre-match press conference saying that there is still an ‘awful lot of business’ that needs to be done.

West Ham boss David Moyes has called for more signings to be made at the club this summer

Maxwel Cornet is joining from Burnley for £17.5million, making him their fifth summer signing after Nayef Aguerd, Alphonse Areola, Flynn Downes and Gianluca Scamacca.

However, Moyes’ call for more reinforcements was cautiously cooled as the 59-year-old admitted the London outfit are only interested in high-quality players.

‘In my mind we’re far from finished. We lost four players – three and a goalkeeper – at the end of the season. We didn’t bring anyone in in January.

‘We have to fill these voids. But we want quality players – we don’t just want to fill it for the sake of filling it.’

Moyes said West Ham have ‘a lot of concerns’ heading into the new Premier League season

The West Ham manager further cast doubts over his side’s ability to get the better of Manchester City when he revealed Italy international Scamacca would be unavailable for selection.

Fans would have been hoping to catch a first glimpse of their new £30million striker, but Moyes struck off his chances of featuring against City saying: ‘Gianluca has only just joined us and he’s a little bit behind so I’m not expecting him to be available this weekend.

‘He’s not played any minutes in pre-season so it makes it very difficult to put him out so soon.

‘He has trained but not as regular and as consistent, and the transfer took quite a bit off him. We’ve got him in, I like what I see.’

The West Ham boss additionally voiced concerns on his side’s pre-season injury crisis that has left new centre-back Aguerd sidelined for 10 weeks after undergoing ankle surgery.

‘We’ve got quite a lot of concerns but I’m not going to give you them.

‘We’re trying to become a side which can become competitive at the top end of the league. We have to make sure we go again. We’re in a little bit of a rebuild. It may take time.’

Moyes guided West Ham to a Europa League semi-final and seventh place in the Premier League last season but is hoping to further build on recent success.
