We transformed this shabby old beachside home into a spectacular Palm Springs inspired escape in just six months – and you won’t believe what it looks like now

An oceanside property 200m away from one of Australia’s most stunning beaches has just hit the market – and its ‘magazine-worthy’ remodel is wowing all who walks by.

Rosie and David King, from Adelaide, had been searching for the ‘perfect’ holiday home since 2019 when they stumbled upon the Aldinga Beach cottage in 2022 for $1.17million.

They’re now hoping to sell their newly-created luxury abode ‘Casa Billie’ for $1.7million.

‘We went to Palm Springs and just fell in love with mid-century modern architecture. The landscape, the colours, everything about it,’ Rosie told FEMAIL.

‘We wanted a blank canvas we could transform. As soon as I saw the house, I knew it was the one.’

The three-bedroom home on the Fleurieu coastline now transports visitors to the diamond beaches of California with the deep blue of the Mediterranean sea at their footsteps, a portal to a different destination.

Rosie said the home had ‘great bones’ and the right character features to carry out their vision – including the beautiful, curved windows and amount of space in the front and back yards.

‘It was originally being sold as a knockdown which just broke my heart,’ she said. ‘It had so much potential – it was in such good shape. I really enjoyed turning it into something completely new and giving it a new life.’

Its exterior is now a moon-bright white and borrows from the white buildings of Santorini.

David is a builder and his expert background was essential for the space. While Rosie isn’t a professional interior decorator, her keen eye worked wonders on two previous renovation projects the couple worked on.

They also completely flipped the floor plan of the house, forcing them to dig out the previously established rose garden for an easy-care terrain of the desert.

‘I really wanted to keep the rose garden, but we pretty much moved every internal wall. There was no way,’ she said.

There is still 300m of untouched outdoor space that can be transformed – perhaps by adding in a pool, a vegetable garden or a granny flat.

Another aspect of what makes the house especially unique is its surroundings.

‘We’re really close to the beach and so there’s a mix of houses in the area, but ours is quite different,’ Rosie said.

The landscaper expertly chose native plants which blend in with the beachy environment.

‘I was worried it might stick out like a sore thumb but it fits in really well with the area,’ Rosie said. ‘The olive trees especially make the spot look very Mediterranean.’

While the couple originally bought and rebuilt the house to be their holiday home for the next few decades, the renovation project shed light on a new dream for them.

‘We thought we’d have the house forever, but we loved the process of building it so much that we want to do another project. We didn’t plan on selling it at all but it’s a bittersweet experience.’
