We weren’t expecting that, Mr Bond! Survey reveals Britons’ favourite 007 actors… and the results could leave you shaken AND stirred

  • Sean Connery has been voted the greatest James Bond in a RadioTimes.com poll
  • Roger Moore and current Bond Daniel Craig failed to make it into the top three
  • Connery won with 44% of the vote, ahead of Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan

Who’s the best James Bond? The results of a poll will leave some 007 fans spitting out their martinis in shock.

Because while Sean Connery has been voted the greatest, Roger Moore and current Bond Daniel Craig failed to make it into the top three.

The Scottish actor came out on top in the survey for RadioTimes.com with 44 per cent of the vote, ahead of Timothy Dalton in second, with 32 per cent, and Pierce Brosnan in third with 23 per cent.

More than 14,000 people voted for their favourite, with actors pitted against each other in different rounds of the survey.

Round one saw Connery knock out Craig, with 56 per cent of the vote compared with Craig’s 43 per cent.

Brosnan won round two with 76 per cent against 24 per cent for George Lazenby, whose sole appearance was in 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Round three had perhaps the most surprising result, with Moore knocked out of the competition with 41 per cent of the vote by his immediate successor Dalton, who scored 49 per cent.

But the final round, pitting the three winners against each other, saw Connery voted the greatest Bond of all time ahead of Dalton and Brosnan.

Tim Glanfield, editorial director of RadioTimes.com, said: ‘Sean Connery has once again proven he’s the Bond with the midas touch.

‘He Thunderball-ed over his opponents and received the most votes from RadioTimes.com readers (with love). It seems just like diamonds, Sean Connery’s appeal as 007 is for ever!’

Connery, now 89, played Bond in the first five films of the series, starting with Dr No in 1962, and returned for 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever.

Moore starred in seven films, Dalton in two and Brosnan in four. Craig’s fifth and final film, No Time To Die, will be released in November.
