Wealthy porn star’s brutal message to tenants amid housing crisis

One of Australia’s top porn stars and escorts has delivered a brutal message to tenants amid Australia’s housing crisis.

Hayley Vernon, who became a millionaire off OnlyFans, said she has little sympathy for everyday Aussies who have been kicked out of their rental homes by so-called ‘greedy landlords’.

‘I’m sorry if this offends someone, but I’d be kicking you out and hiking up the rent to cover my mortgage, too. Why should the owner pick up the slack?’ she wrote.

‘As harsh as that sounds, everything has a flow-on effect. I’m paying $7 for a coffee in the morning. I’m not protesting, I’m having to cop it sweet because of general inflation – it’s the same with real estate,’ she explained.

‘If you’re not in a position to pay for it you need to look at alternate accommodation or housing,’ Hayley continued.

‘Yeah, I know there’s a housing shortage but that’s really not the owner’s problem who is using the asset as an investment.’

The adult film star, who shot to fame on Married At First Sight in 2020, received some backlash from her followers, with many pointing out that she’s financially secure and not struggling like many other Australians.

Hayley explained that she didn’t have money for the majority of her life and had lived in shared accommodation for years to get by.

‘You have to do what you have to do,’ she said. ‘It’s relative to your individual circumstances. Everyone’s feeling the pinch – a dollar doesn’t go far, but expecting someone else to pick up your slack is beyond bulls**t.

‘No one should have to pay for a stranger to live in their house. Rant over!’

It comes after Australians brutally mocked the Reserve Bank governor’s suggestion that people should take on a room-mate to help solve the housing crisis.

Philip Lowe told a Senate estimates hearing on Wednesday that the housing crisis could be alleviated if rents and house prices increase even more so people are forced into share-houses.

Lowe was proposing an answer to one aspect of the housing crisis, the decrease in the number of Australians per household since 2020.

At the start of the pandemic there were about 2.6 residents per Australian home, a figure which has fallen to under 2.55 now.

By some estimations that means an additional 140,000 houses and apartments are now needed to house Australia’s existing population.

Mr Lowe blamed the pandemic for fewer people living in Australian homes, a change which is at odds with a widely accepted shortage of properties.

‘The population is increasing by two per cent this year, are there two per cent more houses? No,’ he said.

His answer was for rents and house prices to keep going up, thus acting as a deterrent to people living alone and instead forcing them to share more often.

‘The higher prices do lead people to economise on housing, don’t they? Kids don’t move out of home because the rent is too expensive, or you decide to get a flatmate or a housemate,’ he said.

‘We need more people on average to live in each dwelling and prices do that.’

Across two-thirds of Sydney, unit rents rose more than 10 per cent in the last year, while in Melbourne the increases were even greater.

In Melbourne city rents went up 46.7 per cent between April 2022 and 2023, and in 20 suburbs rents went up at least 16.5 per cent.

In a statement to Daily Mail Australia, the Tenants’ Union of NSW blasted Lowe for ‘missing the point’ of the housing crisis with his advice.

‘Like all advice that attempts to place the blame for the issues of the housing system on the people who are being harmed by those issues, this advice misses the point,’ Tenants’ Union CEO Leo Patterson Ross said.

‘Housing is an essential service, and accountability for its failings rests with government.

‘Through issues in our taxation, planning and regulatory systems we aren’t ensuring that people have good quality, safe and affordable homes.’

Mr Patterson Ross said sharing was the only option for many Aussies to reduce their costs, but it was ‘not appropriate for many people, and people should not have to give up their privacy at home if they do not want to’.

Lowe’s name was trending on twitter on Wednesday because of his controversial comments.

He was slammed as ‘out of touch’ by furious Aussies on social media.

‘He has no clue,’ said a single dad who lives in a townhouse with three children.

‘I’m hardly going to move in with my mum in to her 3 bedroom house or get some rando to live with me to pay my rent with my kids.’
