  • The midfielder was out of contract in the summer and allowed to go on a free
  • Snodgrass is Sam Allardyce’s first transfer since he was appointed as manager

West Brom have announced the signing of veteran West Ham midfielder Robert Snodgrass on an 18-month deal.

The 33-year-old former Scotland international joins after a four-year spell at the Hammers, where he spent one of the years on loan at the Baggies’ local rivals Aston Villa.

His contract was set to expire in the summer, but West Brom made a move to bring him in straight away, and announced the signing for an undisclosed fee.

Sam Allardyce’s side are in trouble towards the bottom of the Premier League table, but it is hoped that Snodgrass’ experience will help push them out of the bottom three by the end of the season.

The Baggies manager told the club’s official website: ‘I’m absolutely delighted that he has chosen to take up the challenge with us.

‘He’ll add Premier League experience and Premier League quality to our side. He’s left-footed. We all look for balance.

‘When you get the right balance in the team with left-footed players they can produce for you down that left side.

‘He tells me he’s playing holding midfield, left of a three, wide left and right, so he’s versatile across midfield.

‘I’ve heard from many, many people that he is exceptional in the dressing room which is a bonus on top of his qualities.’

The permanent move for Snodgrass means West Brom still have a remaining loan slot  available for another signing this window, after Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher joined the Baggies on a season-long loan in September.

Snodgrass made six appearances for West Ham this season and was deemed surplus to requirements at the London Stadium.

The 33-year-old does have two goals to his name, though struggled for first-team minutes.

He signed for the West Ham in January 2017 under previous manager Slaven Bilic.

It was Bilic who Allardyce recently replaced at the Hawthorns, following a poor start to the season, which other than a draw against Liverpool, has yet to improve under the British manager.
