‘We have lucky stars for sure’: Indie band Wet Leg say they still can’t believe they’re opening for Harry Styles’ Love on Tour as they question why there are less women in music

Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers of Wet Leg still can’t believe they are opening for Harry Styles Love on Tour across Europe and the UK.

The indie rock band, who will perform in stadiums to tens of thousands of fans, still can’t get over their ‘luck’ as they are set to warm up for the Watermelon Sugar singer.

Four of the dates of Harry’s tour include London’s Wembley Arena as well as a final two performances at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium in June.

Hester told PORTER: ‘It doesn’t make any sense to me. I don’t understand who prayed to which god to get us on tour with him. We have lucky stars for sure.’

The British duo, who released their first album in 2022 which went straight to number one in the UK, have already toured with Florence Welch.

The pair are now also making huge waves globally after they won two Grammy Awards and two Brit Awards earlier this year.

At the Brit Awards, Wet Leg beat the likes of Arctic Monkeys and The 1975 and without them, the category was male dominated.

The indie band took to the stage during the evening and were accompanied by a female maverick Morris dancing act.

Rhian said of the performance: ‘I like working with other women and queer and non-binary people, and I wish there was more of that.

‘Everyone on our team for the Brits was female or non-binary and that was great. But why are there less women doing music? Why on our [music] course were we among the only girls?’

Wet Leg were quick to rise to fame during the Covid-19 pandemic and released their debut album in 2022.

The pair became friends when they attended the Isle Of Wight College, where they grew up, and a decade later they decided to make music together.

They first signed to the Domino Recording Company in 2019, who have also worked with Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand.

Over time, the girls admitted their friendship turned into a ‘casual relationship’ and have since claimed – albeit tongue in cheek – that they are ‘married’.

Rhian previously told Exclaim! Magazine: ‘We started off in a pretty casual relationship and now we’re married.’

Hester added: ‘But I think it’s really amazing to be experiencing this with you and the band. I feel very supported through a really scary time.’
