Wetherspoon has been slammed after serving an ‘undercooked’ peri-peri chicken with jollof rice that ‘looks like it’s still alive’.

London-based singer Septimus Prime, 23, who appeared on The Voice in 2017 – shared a picture of his  £8.25 lacklustre meal to Twitter with the simple caption:’weatherspoons peri peri chicken’.

The snap showed a half chicken with grey skin slathered in a bright orange sauce with added pepper next to orange rice.

In a second tweet Septimus added: ‘£8.25 for the meal. Jollof rice tasted like all lives matter. Chicken fell off the bone really nice but the sauce tasted like black pepper and tomato sauce. 2/10 (2 cos the apple juice was cold and nice)’.

‘That chicken looks like it was alive 15 minutes ago,’ joked one.

‘It looks like half a barely cooked chicken with some Nando’s sauce on it,’ said another.

‘So they just dumped some peri sauce on top of boiled chicken,’ joked a third.

‘Nice to see they are using radiators to cook the food,’ added one user.

‘That chicken died in vain,’ another wrote.

‘This. should. be. illegal,’ said another.

‘That chicken has less colour than a sheet of A4 paper,’ wrote one.

‘That chicken ain’t even dead they just gave it a trim’.

Others joked that the ‘ vegetarians are on to something,’ and that ‘maybe Peta are right’.

In November, Wetherspoon pubs revealed an assault on Nando’s by serving a new range of chargrilled chicken meals from today starting at just £7.99 with a drink.

The Watford-based pub chain said the British farm assured chicken is served on the bone having been marinated, slow cooked and finished on the chargrill.

The half-chicken comes with coleslaw and either a lemon and herb glaze and a garlic and herb dip; or with a spicy Naga chilli and citrus glaze and Sriracha hot sauce.

Both meals are served with a choice of chips, spicy rice or salad – and customers can also add a portion of five chicken wings as well as spicy seasoning to their chips.

The majority of the company’s pubs – 644 in total – will be serving the main meals at the price of £7.99 including a soft drink or £9.29 with a alcoholic drink – but it’s more expensive in London.

Prices are slightly higher in the remainder of pubs – around 170 – and there are 14 pubs where prices will be lower. The five chicken wings cost £2.50 in all pubs.

The headline price is nearly half the equivalent at Nando’s which offers a similar meal for £12.45 plus £1.65 for a soft drink – or beer from £3.95 and wine from £3.15

 Wetherspoon declined to comment.
