‘What a sad little life, Spain’: England fans console one another with social media memes mocking their rivals after World Cup heartbreak (and vow to get Mary Earps’ iconic ‘F*** Off!’ on their t-shirts)

Football fans have taken to social media to share hilarious memes following the Lionesses’ heartbreaking 1-0 defeat in the World Cup Final.

The Lionesses succumbed to defeat after Spain went a goal up in the 29th minute when Olga Carmona Garcia struck a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Mary Earps from a tight angle on the left side of the penalty area.

It was the only goal of the game and the Lionesses were unable to find an equalizer.

Despite the disappointment, football fans across the UK have taken to social media to console each other with memes picking out the highlights of the match.

They included poking fun at the Spanish team’s form on the pitch and calling into question the referee, who many argued made wrong calls throughout the game.

One person compared the end of the match to the now infamous meme from Come Dine with Me, while others called for the promised Bank Holidays to be calculated via the amount of extra time on the pitch.

And in a stand out moment from the game, many used the passionate shouts of ‘f*** off’ from Mary Earps after she made a heroic penalty save.

After Earps had dived left and caught Hermoso’s tame penalty, the England goalkeeper proceeded to wave her arms and shout ‘f*** off’.

She came in for praise on social media from fans who loved her in-your-face attitude – though some weren’t as keen and thought she could have controlled her emotions better.

Another user shared a snippet from the now infamous video of singer Adele at a basketball game, comparing her expression to that of the referee, while others questioned what one Spanish player had written on her shirt.

Elsewhere, users took to social media to share images of their post match pints and to congratulate the Lionesses for having made it to the grand final.

One wrote: ‘You did well! Well done! Time for a pint I think!’ and another added: ‘Good effort from the Lionesses but it wasn’t to be. Managed to stay off the beer until full time but the Toffees are up soon and soothing lotion is needed’.

Another lamented that while the Lionesses were unable to bring it home, ‘having a pint at an excuse at 10:30am’ had done the British proud.

It was a sentiment shared by England’s manager Sarina Wiegman, who admitted Spain deserved to win the World Cup final today but urged that England should still be very proud of themselves.

Speaking after Spain’s trophy celebrations, she said: ‘I think Spain were a little bit better than us today and they had a great tournament, so they deserved it I think.’

‘What we have done, how we’ve played and who we’ve tried to be, overcoming so many challenges, I think we can be very proud of ourselves, even if it doesn’t feel like that at the moment.’
