WhatsApp messages reveal how Julie Bishop was betrayed during her run for Prime Minster

Julie Bishop has quit her position as foreign minister as bombshell messages reveal the sabotage and betrayal behind her run for the top job.

Ms Bishop decided it was ‘in the interests of the nation’ that she retire as a minister but will remain on the backbench until the next federal election, Perth Now reported.

Ms Bishop was running against Peter Dutton and Scott Morrison, to become Australia’s next prime minister.

Leaked messages broadcast on ABC’s Insiders program on Sunday morning have exposed the betrayal Ms Bishop faced during her run for the top job.

The thread titled ‘Friends for Stability’ allege Mathias McCormann  was securing votes for Ms Bishop to keep Scott Morrison out of the race.

‘Cormann rumoured to be putting some WA votes behind Julie Bishop in round 1,’ a message believed to be have sent by Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher read.

‘Be aware that this is a ruse trying to get her ahead of Morrison so he drops out and his votes go to Dutton.

‘Despite our hearts tugging us to Julie we need to vote with our heads for Scott in Round one.’

‘Someone should tell Julie,’ someone wrote.

‘Agree,’ another responded.

‘I have. Very respectfully’, Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne allegedly wrote.

Ms Bishop was knocked out of the first round of voting after receiving only 11 votes.

No one from Western Australia voted for her.

Insiders host Barrie Cassidy said Ms Bishop was ‘entitled to be both embarrassed and angry’.

‘In the end she was a victim of tactics and I’m sure that helps to explain why she is less than impressed,’ he said.
