Where are the notorious women portrayed in Underbelly now?

They are famous for their association to crime families in Melbourne and Sydney.

And the striking lives of Judy Moran, Trish Moran, Roberta Williams and Danielle McGuire have all been detailed for Channel 9 show, Underbelly.

With the true-crime drama series set to return to television screens early next year, we take a look at what these fascinating women are doing today.

Portrayed in different seasons by respected actresses Caroline Gillmer and Debra Byrne, the character of Judy Moran is one of Underbelly’s most powerful. 

The matriarch of the Moran family Judy, now 76, is currently in prison serving a 26-year sentence for the murder of Des Moran, who was the brother of her late husband Lewis.

Her first husband, Leslie John “Johnny” Cole, was shot dead in Sydney in 1982 and her two sons, Mark Moran and Jason Moran, were both murdered in gangland wars.

She released her book My Story in February 2005. The book was recalled less than a week later on the grounds that it contained false allegations in regard to deceased detective Fred Silveste.

It was reprinted and returned to book stores in May that year and went on to sell thousands of copies.

Her son Jason’s widow Trish Moran (née Kane), played by Eliza Szonert in the series, fled to Western Australia after his death but ultimately moved back to Melbourne.

Trisha’s sister, Suzanne Kane, a woman who Judy treated like a daughter, was handed a two-year wholly-suspended sentence for being an accessory to Des’s murder after the fact.

Following her husband’s death, Trisha was linked to Benjamin John Horn, who was arrested by Australian Federal Police in 2009 for an alleged $20 million drug plot. 

Best known as the former girlfriend of Australian drug lord Tony Mokbel, Danielle McGuire also dated Jason’s older brother, Mark Moran.

Danielle, portrayed by former Neighbours actress Madeline West in Underbelly, went to court for the first time in 1998 when charged with trafficking $800,000 in ecstasy.

She has a 10-year-old daughter, Renate, named after Tony’s sister-in-law and a 21-year-old daughter, Brittany, from her first marriage. 

She has remained mostly silent throughout the years, despite being linked to Matt, Tony, and later, former Bandido bikie gang sergeant-at-arms, Toby Mitchell.

Rounding out the prominent women featured in the television crimes series is Roberta Williams, played by Logie-award winning actress Kat Stewart.

Roberta was married to convicted murderer and drug trafficker, the late Carl Williams, whose name featured prominently in Victorian gangland killings.

She announced in August this year that she wanted to represent the Australian People’s Party at the next federal election and run against Opposition Leader Bill Shorten.
