Whole Foods recalls two of its pestos after a customer suffered an allergic reaction to undeclared nuts and milk

Whole Foods Market is voluntarily recalling two of its specialty house-made pestos from five US states due to undeclared dairy and nuts.
The supermarket chain’s in-house basil pesto and in-house sundried tomato pesto may contain milk and tree nuts, specifically walnuts and pine nuts, neither of which were listed on the ingredients labels.
Those who have milk or tree nut allergies could suffer life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume either sauce.
A customer reported an allergic reaction and reported it to Whole Foods, although it’s unclear when, the US Food and Drug Administration said in an alert on Thursday.

The basil pesto and sundried tomato pesto have since been removed from store shelves.
Both pestos were sold between May 17 and June 4 at 41 Whole Foods Market stores in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
The recalled products were old by the pound in individual clear plastic containers and were available at antipasti bars.
The basil pesto has a PLU code beginning with 255926 and the sundried tomato pesto has a PLU code beginning with 256009.
Affected products have sell-by dates ranging from June 7, 2019 to June 26, 2019.
Customers are urged not to consume the pestos and either throw them out or return them to the store where they were purchased with a valid receipt for a refund.
Consumers with additional questions have been asked to call Whole Foods at (844) 936-8255.
Earlier this year, the supermarket chain recalled several items in eight states over salmonella fears.
It came after reports that baby spinach and Mesclun leaves, which were used in a variety of Whole Foods products such as pizza and sandwiches, were potentially contaminated at Satur Farms in New York’s Long Island.
This is also the latest in a series of recalls from foods companies due to undeclared allergens.
Choice Canning Company, a Pennsylvania-based company, recalled more than 35,000 pounds of chicken fried rice skillet meals in March after it failed to list milk as one of its ingredients on the label.
That same month, Conagra Brands, Inc – the parent company of Chef Boyardee – recalled nearly 3,000 pounds of food after beef ravioli was accidentally packed in the pots for rice with chicken and vegetables.
