‘Why don’t you take your own advice?’ NSW Police double demerits video divides the internet

A mock infomercial by police spruiking double demerit points this long weekend has sparked controversy on social media.

NSW Police uploaded a tongue in cheek video on its Facebook page on Thursday ahead of double demerits this long weekend across the state, which started on Friday and will continue until 11.59pm Monday.

The 43-second video goes through three of the most common driving offences and their respective fines and loss of demerit points if motorists are busted by police breaking the law.

The video spruiks ‘two for one’ specials for motorists who don’t wear a seatbelt or helmet ($337 and six demerits), speed ($2,435 ans 12 points) and mobile phone offences ($448 and 10 points).

‘We have some lovely bargains you’ll definitely want to miss out,’ the narrator says in the video.

‘Now remember, if you want to miss out on these bargains, then all you have to do is follow the road rules.’

Opinion over the online video was divided, which ranged from amusement to outrage.

‘I think you morons should take your own advice, not one of you follows the speed limit on the freeway,’ one man commented.

Another added: ‘The budget top up weekend, where real crimes don’t matter but revenue does.’
