Why is Manchester United vs Chelsea postponed this weekend?

Manchester United were set to play Chelsea this weekend, with Erik ten Hag’s side still fighting for a place in next season’s Champions League, but the fixture will no longer take place… so why was the game postponed?

Following their Champions League exit against Real Madrid last night, Chelsea’s attention will now turn to the Premier League. However, much to the disappointment of fans of the London club, the Blues will not be in action this weekend.

Frank Lampard’s men were set to face Manchester United in a Premier League clash this Saturday. However, they will now have to wait a week until they play their next game. The Blues are back in action on Wednesday, April 26 against Brentford.

The Blues were beaten 2-1 by Brighton and Hove Albion in their last league game and currently sit 11th in the table in what has been a poor campaign for the club.

As for United, the Red Devils defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 in their last league outing – with Antony and Diogo Dalot scoring for the Manchester side. Erik ten Hag’s men currently sit third in the table and are three points ahead of Newcastle United.

Why was Manchester United vs Chelsea postponed?

Ten Hag’s Manchester United were due to play Chelsea on Saturday, April 22 at Old Trafford.

However, the game was forced to be postponed after the Red Devils beat Fulham 3-1 in the FA Cup quarter-final.

United will now face Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton on Sunday in the semi-final for a chance to play in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

This weekend’s clash between United and Brighton will kick off at 4.30pm.

When will the two sides play each other?

At the time of writing, the Premier League are yet to confirm a new date for the game. There are currently three midweek slots available in May to rearrange the fixture between United and Chelsea.

However, two of those could be taken up by the Europa League semi-finals should United beat Sevilla.

United will play the second leg against the Spanish side on Thursday. Ten Hag’s men come into the game after a 2-2 draw in the first leg last week.

The Europa League semi-final games will take place on Thursday, May 11 and Thursday, May 18.

Therefore, the only available slot for the Chelsea game will be on the week commencing May 22.

There will not be any time to play the fixture after that week, as the Premier League is scheduled to finish on Sunday, May 28.
