Why Kate Middleton wears pink outfits after Meghan Markle interview: psychologist’s view

The Duchess of Cambridge has been wearing pink ensembles following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s bombshell Oprah interview to appear ‘lovable and convey kindness’, according to a psychologist.

Kate, 39, sported a blush pussybow blouse during an appearance hours after her sister-in-law claimed the two women had a tearful confrontation days before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s 2018 wedding.

Mother-of-three Kate then donned a £65 pink jumper from Boden for her first in-person engagement of the year, yesterday – just four days after her in-laws tell-all with Oprah Winfrey, in which they laid bare the extent of their rift with the Royal Family.

The duchess’ recent penchant for the colour suggests wanting to ‘reduce feelings of anger and resentment’ as well as ‘conveying kindness and understanding in a non-threatening way’, according to Lancashire-based psychologist Lee Chambers.

He told FEMAIL: ‘Dressing in the colour pink can represent a number of feelings. As a colour, it combines elements of red such as affection, and aspects of white, such as purity.

‘The symbolism of wearing pink suggests that Kate is wanting to feel lovable and listened too. As a colour, it conveys kindness and understanding in a non-threatening way, which is a message that she will want to be communicating at the moment.

He continued: ‘Wearing pink can also impact our emotions, reduce feelings of anger and resentment, and promote a calm reassurance and feelings of empathy, powerful in times of instability and sensitivity.

‘Pink as a colour has a de-stimulating effect, taking the edge off powerful emotions and softening stronger feelings, especially negative ones. This is especially powerful when we first cover ourselves in the colour.’

The psychologist also noted that Kate may be dressing in pink ‘due to pleasant memories associated with the colour, giving her a feeling of comfort’.

Similarly, celebrity stylist Rochelle White said: ‘Potentially in Kate’s situation, wearing pink could mean that she is trying to show her sweet, nice and playful side following Megan’s interview.

‘Pink portrays various things like charming, feminine, and tenderness and due to the way she was portrayed in Megan and Harry’s interview she might be trying to say something with her fashion in a sublet way.’

The stylist also suggested the duchess could be wearing the fun colour during recent appearances to improve her own mood.

‘By wearing these colours I think it’s making her feel good and move into spring in a positive way. I think it helps her feel better and show that she is in a good place,’ Rochelle said.

Meghan claimed in her interview with Oprah Winfrey that she experienced more negativity towards her than the Duchess of Cambridge because of the colour of her skin.

In the explosive interview, Meghan also spoke of her relationship with the Duchess of Cambridge, and claimed Kate made her cry when the two clashed at a bridesmaids fitting shortly before she married Prince Harry, 36.

Reports of the bitter feud between the duchesses first emerged in November 2018, when sources claimed Meghan had been left displeased with the ‘stressful’ fitting.

The Duchess of Sussex also insisted that she has now forgiven Kate, who she said bought her flowers to apologise about the incident.

The infamous row with Prince William’s wife made headlines around the world after a supposed falling out over dresses for the flower girls.

Accounts differ as to whether the cause of the row was a disagreement on whether the bridesmaids should wear tights – Meghan reportedly believed they should not – or whether it stemmed from Princess Charlotte’s dress not fitting.

Meghan was also asked about a memorable joint-outing to Wimbledon in July 2019, where the pair put on a united front and were pictured laughing together.

During the interview she appeared to cast doubt on the authenticity of that seemingly affable appearance, saying: ‘Nothing is what it looks like’.

Row that ‘made Meghan cry’

Reports circulated ahead of the Sussexes’ nuptials that Meghan left Kate in tears at Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress fitting.

But Meghan told Oprah the ‘reverse happened’.

Meghan said she was not sharing the information to be ‘disparaging’, but added it was ‘really important for people to understand the truth’.

‘She’s a good person,’ the duchess added.

‘Waity Katie’ jibe ‘not the same as racism’

Meghan said her treatment by the press cannot be compared to Kate being called ‘Waity Katie’ because it is ‘not the same as racism’.

The Duchess of Sussex said she believed she had been singled out because she was ‘not just British’. She said: ‘I think the volume of what was coming in and the interest was greater because of social media, because of the fact that I was not just British…

‘If they can compare what the experience that I went through was similar to what has been shared with us, Kate was called Waity Katie, waiting to marry William.

‘While I imagine that was hard, and I do, I can’t picture what that felt like, this is not the same.’

Harry: ‘Trapped’ William and I ‘on different paths’

When asked about if he remains close to William he replied: ‘I love William to bits. He’s my brother.

‘We’ve been through hell together. I mean, we have a shared experience. But we’re on different paths’.
