Why Sydney tattoo artists say couples should never get the name of their partner inked on them

Tattoo artists have shared their honest thoughts about couples getting each other’s name permanently inked on their body.

Artists from MARKD Tattoos, in Sydney, were unanimous in not recommending clients brand themselves with a partner’s name.

One said getting someone’s name is ‘like a curse’ and the pair are sure to break up while another said he’s covered up four of the six couple tattoos he’s done.

The hot takes divided fans of the studio as some agreed couple tattoos are a bad idea and said they wouldn’t ever get anyone’s name.

While others shared stories of successful couple tattoos from spouses whose relationship had lasted for years after getting inked.

Artists from Sydney tattoo studio MARKD have revealed the one tattoo people should never get is of a partner’s name. One said it’s bad luck while another said it was a ‘curse’

The question: ‘How do you feel about couples wanting to get their partner’s name tattooed on them?’ was posed to each of MARKD’s artists in a series of videos posted to TikTok.

One artist, Will, said not to get a partner’s name unless you are married or have kids together.

‘If not, it’s bad luck,’ he added.

Another artist admitted he had his wife’s name inked on his arm but warned it is ‘a pretty bad idea’ while a third said it was ‘taboo’.

‘Don’t do it, it’s like a curse, (you’ll) probably break up the next week if you do it. If you lasted then good on you but I wouldn’t recommend it,’ artist Harley said.

Someone else simply said couple name tattoo was a 'taboo' topic

In a second clip, artist Angel agreed saying they would also ‘not recommend’ getting a couple’s tattoo.

‘I see that as double money, they’re coming back for a cover up for sure. No way that’s going to last, don’t do it,’ she quipped.

‘If you do, at least I know I’m tattooing you again for a cover up.’

Artist Ray backed up Angel’s claim in a third video saying he has covered most of the couple name tattoos he has done.

‘I’ve tattooed six couple’s names and I’ve covered up four of them,’ he said.

The clip’s have collectively been viewed more than 2.5million times and many viewers agreed getting a lover’s name tattooed is a no-no.

‘My dad got my ma’s name and they got divorced so he got a coffin over her name,’ one person recalled.

'Don't do it, it's like a curse, (you'll) probably break up the next week if you do it. But if you lasted then good on you but I wouldn't recommend it,' artist Harley said

‘I’m married and I won’t even do it. My husband knows and agrees. Just don’t at all,’ another said.

‘Even if you have kids, it doesn’t mean you will be with each other for the rest of your life,’ a third warned.

Many parents chimed in saying the only name they would considered getting tattooed on then would be their kids’.

But not everyone was convinced as some were all for couple tattoos.

‘My dad has my mum’s whole face on his arm,’ one man said.

‘Nah, it’s not a curse. My man got my name as his first tattoo after a year we’ve been together. We’re married now, five years being together. Bye,’ a second replied.

‘My friend did that a month in to dating someone, been married for 10 years,’ another wrote.

‘Get a small one then if they leave, it’s easy to change it to something else,’ someone else suggested.
