Emancipation is based on the true story of an 1863 photograph taken of a slave known as Whipped Peter, notably for the amount of painful whipping scars on his back.

When talking about stepping into the shoes of the role and the historical photograph, Will, who is also a producer on the project, explained to Vanity Fair, ‘When I look at it now, I feel even more.’

‘Each one of Peter’s scars now has a story behind it. There is a man behind the image. A man who has endured both visible and invisible atrocities that are beyond my imagination,’ the father of three continued.

Emancipation is set to premiere in select theaters early next month on December 2, and will be available to stream on Apple TV+, just in time for Oscars season.

The actor, however, has been banned from attending the award ceremony for ten years following this year’s notable Oscars slap against then-host, Chris Rock, but can still receive nominations.

Earlier on Saturday, Will shared a clip of himself taking a quick Covid test which turned out to be positive. ‘Throwback to when I went viral,’ the star humorously typed in the caption of the post.

The actor had originally planned to attend a screening of Emancipation and surprise the audience, but due to the test results, had to cancel those plans.

The action star showed no signs of illness, but bellowed out exaggerated screams of pain as swirled the test swab around his nasal passages, and was shocked when one hour later, he received a positive result.
