New Centre Court Queen Elena Rybakina admitted she had to win a battle with her nerves as well as Tunisian opponent Ons Jabeur to win the prized Venus Rosewater Dish.

‘I was super nervous before and during the match and I am just glad it is over,’ Rybakina said. ‘I have never experienced anything like that.

‘Ons played a great match and she is an inspiration for everybody in our game. Nobody else plays like she does on tour.

‘It was an honour to play in front of the Royal Box and in such a great atmosphere.’

Rybakina aims at the outset were just to reach the second week of Wimbledon. She added: ‘I never expected this and could not have done it without my team, my sister and my parents.’

The smiling champion had the crowd laughing when she concluded: ‘They cannot be here today but without my parents I wouldn’t be here for sure.’

Beaten finalist Jabeur, the No 3 seed and first African women’s finalist, insisted she will be back next year to try and go one step further and win the whole thing.

She said: ‘Elena stole my title but it’s OK!

‘I love this tournament so much and I feel really sad, but I’m trying to inspire many generations from my country. I hope they are listening.

‘I also want to thank his beautiful crowd for all their support over the two weeks. It’s been amazing.

‘I want to wish Eid Mubarak to everyone celebrating.’
